Our new debit cards made from recycled materials are here. An initiative designed to avoid plastic waste, reduce carbon emissions, and help our customers embark in our sustainability journey with us.
The recycled PVC card will supersede our current card and is made from waste derived from PVC toys, medical and electric plastic, making it also 100% recyclable after usage.
This change will see over 130kgs of plastic waste recycled into our debit cards along with 633.20kgs of CO2 emissions reduced over the next 4 years. Overall, contributing to around 65% reduction in our card production carbon footprint – an important milestone in our sustainability journey.
The initiative for changing our PVC cards to recycled PVC cards was inspired by a customer’s feedback left on our social media page. As part of our commitment to listen to our customers, we took that onboard and implemented the transition now available to all customers. It’s just one more way we’ve diversified our sustainable practices to ensure we continue to act responsibly and play our part to manage our impact on the environment.
Our CEO Stuart Edwards confirmed “at SCCU we are constantly implementing initiatives to reduce our footprint, and offering cards made from recycled materials, that can also be recycled, is another step in the right direction for SCCU as it will significantly reduce the waste and carbon emissions of our current plastic cards.”
Indue, our payment solution partner, was all hands-on deck to facilitate this transition. Indue’s CEO, Derek Weatherly stated, “Plastic waste is a major sustainability challenge for our sector, and we congratulate SCCU on leading the way as one of our first clients to adopt the recycled PVC plastic card”.
The new recycled debit cards are already being sent to new customers and existing customers who require card replacement due to expiration or being lost/stolen. All our customers will have a recycled SCCU debit card in their wallets within the next 4 years.
Being a customer-centric financial institution, our goal is to have positive impact on our community, environment, and organisation. This is the biggest driver of our sustainable focus and leadership.
