SCCU raises over $5,000 for the Leukaemia Foundation

On Sunday, Southern Cross Credit Union hosted a Greatest Shave Event at Kingscliff Beach Hotel. More than 100 people turned out to witness and participate in a procession of mass hair shaving and colouring in support of the Leukaemia Foundation.

With contributions flowing in through sponsorships, raffles and the auctioning of shaving rights, we managed to raise over $5,000, with the final amount yet to be determined.

"The event was so much fun, with plenty of people stepping up and having their hair shaved on the day. One amazing couple, both with really long hair, decided to undergo the shave together in an act of solidarity." recalls event organiser Toni Anstiss of SCCU (pictured below)

Toni also provided the main attraction as her long brown hair was put on the chopping block after shaving rights were auctioned off for $200.

"I'm just glad I could do my bit to help the cause"

"Having your head shaved is nothing compared to what Leukaemia sufferers have to go through, I'm just glad I could do my bit to help the cause. I would definitely encourage anyone who may have it on their bucket list, to just go ahead and sign up for next year!"

Money raised will give families facing blood cancer including leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma the free emotional and practical support they need as well as help fund vital research.

Alongside other 'World's Greatest Shave' participants, ponytails snipped from those taking part are now turned into wigs for cancer patients. Shorter hair clippings will also be transformed into compost and floating booms to absorb oil spills at sea.

SCCU CEO Stuart Edwards mentioned "As a customer owned financial institution, it is important for us to support awareness campaigns and to help make a difference in the communities we live. This year we will also be actively involved in supporting many campaigns including prostate awareness, domestic violence and disability services to name a few as part of our broader Community Engagement program."
